Any conduit provides a straightforward pathway for your assets, but once scaled up as part of a duct bank, it becomes a system of pathways that multiplies both the benefits and challenges. The material properties of your conduit can mean the difference between a streamlined, replicable installation process and an error-prone and wasteful one that doesn’t scale up well.

The unique thermoplastic properties of HDPE Sticks––starting at the molecular level––make them especially suited to the challenges of installing in tight underground spaces across a variety of terrains and climates. Because of these characteristics, HDPE Sticks provide the best of all worlds when reeled or coiled conduit simply isn’t an option––rigidity for precision and accuracy, and flexibility for any route.

Whether you’re building a duct bank for a new power substation, or using tens of thousands of individual sticks on an AI data center campus, the benefits multiply rapidly. Here are five reasons:

Durability and Ductility
As duct banks become increasingly critical infrastructure, HDPE’s superior impact resistance makes it an excellent choice ––it deflects rather than cracks, like other conduit materials such as PVC do, and returns to its original shape after withstanding compressive force. It also moves with the terrain during settlement and adapts to its environment.  Finally, you’ll see less breakage and less wasted product during shipment and handling.

Lightweight and Easy to Handle
HDPE’s lighter weight and higher carry capacity reduce trips, lifts, and movement cost per stick, improving efficiency and lowering labor burden. HDPE sticks are 35-40% lighter than the equivalent PVC sticks, allowing for easier handling and less hassle during the construction of your duct bank on site. Whether you’re moving HDPE Sticks off a truck, around the jobsite or lowering them into the trench and positioning into place, less weight means you’ll have a much easier time and greater success aligning and coupling accurately, which can make all the difference in repeated installations across a series of duct banks.

Flexibility
HDPE is inherently more flexible than other conduit materials such as PVC, fiberglass, and steel. When installed correctly, this means it can often reduce overall sweep requirements and costs over the course of a project.

In stick format, HDPE’s flexibility shines, as it accommodates gradual changes in direction and elevation (of less than 45 degrees) without a preformed sweep, and can easily route around obstacles. Fewer or no sweeps at all can also streamline your material requirements (saving space and simplifying the order process), which pays off in changes in direction or elevation, or when routing into vaults.

Mechanical Coupling-Ready
Especially useful in duct banks, HDPE Sticks offer greater repeatability through mechanical coupling––a benefit which is multiplied across a large system. Coupling can be done quickly and easily on site by hand, with no need to expose crews to toxic, messy adhesives and no waiting for the glue to cure.

In fact, Dura-Line's latest coupling innovation, ConduitConnect®†, is designed specifically for connecting HDPE Sticks in duct bank applications––it provides an air- and water-tight seal with a pre-lubricated gasket for easy installation, and its high-strength HDPE body is ideal for buried duct applications. And to simplify coupling even further, Dura-Line offers sticks with pre-installed ConduitConnect couplers, for a true plug-and-play solution with all of the benefits of HDPE plus the joining functionality of bell-ended pipes.

Sustainability
HDPE’s sustainability benefits also start at the material level––the same properties that make it durable and resistant to impact also mean it won’t leach into surrounding soil, has a long operational lifespan (25+ years), and can be coupled without toxic adhesives.

Municipal Substation Installation

A mid-sized city in the Southeastern US used 40’ lengths of 6” diameter SDR 13.5, coupling the conduit with electrofusion couplers for a strong and even bond.

Campus Installation

A campus build in New Mexico used HDPE Sticks and eliminated the need for sweeps, saving significant cost, time, and complexity.
